Analyzing the best international ecommerce platforms in the US – and Why Shopify is a Good Choice

For a very long time now, everything that has to do with ecommerce in the US has mostly been connected to the Shopify ecommerce solution. The truth is that Shopify is a very complete solution and offers users everything they could possibly need for their ecommerce, so new business owners often do not even look for other options simply going of the reputation that this solution has. However, like all international ecommerce platforms out there, Shopify also has its pros and cons, so make sure to stick around because we are going to be taking a closer look at some of them in this article today.

Ease of use

The first thing that we are going to talk about is actually something that can be considered a pro or a con, depending on how you look at it. First of all, we have to talk a bit about how easy Shopify is to use in order for you to understand our points. The interface is so easy to use, that even if you have never used a platform like this before, you will have no problems managing it and the learning curve is incredibly small for most people. The great thing about this is that you, as the business owner, will be able to focus completely on your sales and manage your business without having to be bothered with technology and other administrative tasks that come with running an online business. You will be able to do this thanks to all of the tools that Shopify offers, like inventory management, store management, automated orders, a very simple and clean interface and much more.

And while this is great for someone that does not really want to deal with the technology, if you are looking for something that will give you a lot more functionality, then this is simply not the platform for you. When you compare Shopify to, what is probably its biggest competitor, Magento, you can immediately see that there is a difference between the two when it comes to functionality. Even though working with Magento will bring you a bit more challenges and a lot more responsibility, the truth is that it is so flexible when it comes to customization that you can pretty much do whatever you want with your store, add a ton of functionalities and manage a larger store with no issues whatsoever.

An amazing choice of themes for your storefront

Something that has really helped Shopify reach the level of being the best international ecommerce platform in the US are also the amazing themes that you can choose from in order to get the best storefront possible. What the themes essentially do is help you create an ecommerce website that looks professional, feels welcoming and looks beautiful, while also giving you everything you need in order to keep your customers interested once they land on your page. Shopify offers you over 100 different options and you will find that they are all separated into different categories, depending on what kind of business you have.

You also have the option to filer the themes when you are looking for the right match and you will be able to choose whether you want it to be mobile friendly, which we highly recommend, whether they are responsive and you can even filter to only see the free options. There aren’t that many of the free options compared to the paid ones, but when you compare the number of them to the free themes that other solutions offer, we have to say that Shopify still has the lead.

Hidden fees on international online shops

When talking about something that can really be considered a downside about Shopify, despite being one of the best global ecommerce platforms, is the fact that there are a lot of fees that are pretty hidden, so much so that you do not even know you are paying them until it is too late. The plans start at $29 for the most basic plan that you will definitely need to upgrade from, all the way up to $299 for some of the more advanced plans that are offered. And while this is a kind of expense that you know about, the problems come once you start adding extra functionalities from the app store, once you have to pay the one-time fee for the theme or template you have chosen to use, and especially once you start selling and find yourself having to pay transaction fees.

When it comes to the prices that come with the apps, the only thing that you can do is use very few of them and only add what you really need, because once they start piling up you will really be able to notice that on your monthly payment. The theme payment is, like we mentioned above, a one-time payment, so you will not have to struggle with that one as much. The biggest problems appear when it comes to the transaction fees. If you want to stop the transaction fees you will have to switch your store’s payment gateway to Shopify Payments, and for a lot of business owners that really is not something they want to do. Payment gateways like PayPal, Amazon Pay and much more of the more mainstream payment gateways are a better option for customers, so it is understandable why a lot of business owners are hesitant to switch. Here you will have to decide for yourself what you want to do and what will work best for your business, but we have to admit that you are put in a pretty bad situation.

There is no doubt that Shopify is an excellent platform and there is a reason why it is recognized as the best global ecommerce platform in the world. However, we also feel that we have to warn you about some of the downsides that you will have to deal with, and that is exactly why we wrote this article. Whether those downsides will make a huge difference is up to you to decide, but we hope that this article has helped make the decision about whether this is the right platform for your business in the US much easier than it was before.
